YH4L Junior Board
Young Hearts working to save Young Hearts
The YH4L Junior Board was created in 2014, for local teens to become involved in the mission of the Young Hearts for Life® program.The board is made up of 75 students from 15 area schools. Activities range from education about Sudden Cardiac Death, assisting in registration of students, attending area heart screenings, making educational videos for high schools, and fundraising for ECGs for students.
The Executive Board meets the second Sunday of each month at 6:00 pm. The entire Junior Board meets immediately following the Executive Board at 6:30 pm. Meetings consist of education, service, and planning for future events.

Meet Our 2017-2018 Executive Junior Board
David has been a been a member of the Young Hearts for Life Junior Board for three years. He is a senior at Benet Academy and also plays varsity tennis there. David volunteers as a group peer model at Little Friends and is in the National Honors Society. David hopes to study Entrepreneurship in college.
Joe is a senior at Benet Academy, and this is his 4th year on the YH4L Junior Board. He is on the varsity football and lacrosse teams and is a member of the National Honors Society. Outside of school, Joe volunteers at Hinsdale Hospital and helps lead an organization called Let’s Play Sports. In college, he plans on completing pre-med requirements while pursuing his interest in social policy, health care access, and reform.
Megan is a senior at Glenbard West High School, and it’s her third year on the YH4L Junior Board. At school, Megan is a member of the swim team, Student Council Executive Board, Operation One World, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. After high school, she hopes to study business or engineering.
Jack Shannon Co-Vice President
Christopher is a senior at Benet Academy. This is his third year on the YH4L junior board. At Benet Academy, he is involved with the Benet Herald, the science Olympiad teem, peer tutoring in chemistry, debate team, and founder of the non-profit organization, Teens for A Better You. Christopher plans to pursue a PhD in public health or public policy, and eventually go onto a career in teaching and research.
Katrin Gatz is a senior at Metea Valley High School and this is her third year on the YH4L Junior Board. At school, Katrin is a member of Key Club, Youth and Government, Special Olympics, and is a varsity tennis player. Outside of school, she is a tutor at GiGi’s Playhouse and volunteers with Diveheart. In college, she hopes to study finance and accounting.
Caroline is a senior at Benet Academy. This is her third year on the Junior Board. Caroline is a member of the varsity dance team, a founding member of Benet’s Orchesis Company, and an active Student Government Representative. She is also part of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Caroline hopes to study political science and economics in college.
My name is Grace Schamber, and I am a junior at Benet Academy. This will be my third year on the Junior Board. At school, I am an editor for the school’s yearbook, as well as a member of the National Honors Society. Outside of school, I coach 5th grade girls volleyball at my past grade school. I hope to study pre-med in college, and become a physician’s assistant.

Karina D’Mello is a Senior at Benet Academy. At school, she takes part in many extra curricular activities, including Medical Club, National Honors Society, and Varsity Tennis. Through Young Hearts for Life, she hopes to touch the lives of students in the Chicago area by helping them recieve free EKG’s. This is her third year on the board.
What has the Junior Board been doing?
August 2018: Set up sponsorship of NEW AED contest for YH4L schools Using funds from last years run, board voted to sponsor a new AED program for YH4L. All schools screened by YH4L has an opportunity to win a FREE AED.
October 2018: Learn the “why and how” of EKGs. The Junior Board invited Team Leaders from the program to teach them the why and how of doing an EKG. Everyone saw how easy it was to perform this life saving test.
September 2017: Purchased for program Part of the mission for YH4L is educating the community about what sudden cardiac death is and how to prevent it. The program is fortunate to have volunteers who will help with community presentations. Prior to this, everyone was expected to use their personal computers which caused a number of logistic issues. The Junior Board purchased 2 computers for the program to use in presentations and research.
April 8th, 2018: 3rd Annual YH4L Junior Board 5K Run/Walk

Sponsored Screening: November 4, 2016 – Sponsored screening for all students at Christ the King High School in Chicago. Junior Board members assisted in data entry for the event.
Purchased ECG Machine: With funds raised from last years 5K event, the Junior Board voted to support 2 screenings as well as purchase a new ECG machine for the program.

National Meeting presentation: Junior Board member finished research with Dr. Marek and presented study at American College of Cardiology meeting and American Medical Society of Sports Medicine meeting.
Sponsored and worked screening: May 20th, 2017 Junior Board sponsored screening at Mercy Home for boys and Girls in Chicago. Many of the Junior Board members were able to assist in the screening.

May 2016: Purchased a new EKG Machine to be used at screenings.
Nov 2016 Screening – Using some of the funds which were raised last year, we will be sponsoring a free screening for all the students at Christ the King High School in Chicago.
Research Study: Research projects done with Dr. Marek for national meetings.
