Young Hearts working to save Young Hearts
The YH4L Junior Board was created in 2014, for local teens to become involved in the mission of the Young Hearts for Life® program.The board is made up of 75 students from 15 area schools. Activities range from education about Sudden Cardiac Death, assisting in registration of students, attending area heart screenings, making educational videos for high schools, and fundraising for ECGs for students.
The Executive Board meets the second Sunday of each month at 6:00 pm. The entire Junior Board meets immediately following the Executive Board at 6:30 pm. Meetings consist of education, service, and planning for future events.

Meet Our 2017-2018 Executive Junior Board
Elsa is a senior at Lyons Township High School. She has been on the Junior Board for four years. At school, Elsa actively volunteers as a part of Social Action Club and Future Healthcare Professionals. She spends time as a student leader for Wyldlife during the week. Elsa also plays soccer for LT and for a club team. She is looking to study either biology or engineering in college.
Matt has been a member of the Young Hearts for Life Board for three years. A senior at Benet Academy, Matt plays football and competes in Track and Field. He is a two year National Honor Society member, a three year German Club member, a member of the Recycling Club, and is the Naperville Park District Easter Bunny. Matt hopes to study Computer Science and Economics in college.
Joe is a junior at Benet Academy, and this is his third year on the YH4L Junior Board. He is on the football, lacrosse, and bass fishing teams and is a member of the Spanish Club, Law Club, Medical Club, and the National Honors Society. Outside of school, Joe volunteers at Hinsdale Hospital and helps lead an organization called Let’s Play Sports. He hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the future

Meghan is a senior at Benet Academy in Lisle and this is her 2nd full year on the board. She is looking forward to another great year from the Junior Board and couldn’t be more excited! Meghan is part of the girls lacrosse team at school and enjoys helping others in her community. In her free time, Meghan loves to travel, go to concerts, and be with friends! Meghan is planning to double major in business and nursing in college.
A senior at Benet Academy, this is Ava’s second year on the Junior Board. She has been dancing since she was three years old, and had been a member of the her schools’s dance team all four years of high school. Ava is also the president of the Latin Club at Benet, which is a true passion of hers as well as a member of National Honor Society. When she goes off to college next fall, she would like to double major in biology and business with a minor in psychology on the premed track. Ava loves to volunteer, read, and be with cats in her free time, and she is a server at Villa St. Benedict in Lisle.
Eileen has been part of YH4L since her junior year. She is a senior at Lyons Township High School where she is the co-president of the Future Healthcare Professionals club and a member of the National Honor Society and Math Team. She also plays soccer, tutors elementary school students, and volunteers at La Grange Memorial Hospital. She plans to major in Math while completing pre-med requirements in college.
Karina D’Mello is a junior at Benet Academy. At school, she takes part in many extra curricular activities, including Medical Club, National Honors Society, and Varsity Tennis. Through Young Hearts for Life, she hopes to touch the lives of students in the Chicago area by helping them recieve free EKG’s. This is her second year on the board.

What has the Junior Board been doing?
September 2017: Purchased for program Part of the mission for YH4L is educating the community about what sudden cardiac death is and how to prevent it. The program is fortunate to have volunteers who will help with community presentations. Prior to this, everyone was expected to use their personal computers which caused a number of logistic issues. The Junior Board purchased 2 computers for the program to use in presentations and research.
Sponsored Screening: November 4, 2016 – Sponsored screening for all students at Christ the King High School in Chicago. Junior Board members assisted in data entry for the event.
Purchased ECG Machine: With funds raised from last years 5K event, the Junior Board voted to support 2 screenings as well as purchase a new ECG machine for the program.

National Meeting presentation: Junior Board member finished research with Dr. Marek and presented study at American College of Cardiology meeting and American Medical Society of Sports Medicine meeting.
Sponsored and worked screening: May 20th, 2017 Junior Board sponsored screening at Mercy Home for boys and Girls in Chicago. Many of the Junior Board members were able to assist in the screening.

May 2016: Purchased a new EKG Machine to be used at screenings.
Nov 2016 Screening – Using some of the funds which were raised last year, we will be sponsoring a free screening for all the students at Christ the King High School in Chicago.
